Efteling is something of a Dutch Disneyland, with its huge range of rides, rollercoasters and shows, as well as several onsite accommodation options at its site in the Netherlands/Holland.
But which is the best hotel at Efteling? Or should you go for one of the 'official' self catering lodges or holiday homes?
Here's our comparison of the 'official' places to stay at Efteling, including cost, distance to the park, facilities and customer reviews. All of the official accommodation includes entry to the Efteling theme park, which makes some of them cheaper or comparable in price to staying offsite and buying your own tickets.
But which is the best hotel at Efteling? Or should you go for one of the 'official' self catering lodges or holiday homes?
Here's our comparison of the 'official' places to stay at Efteling, including cost, distance to the park, facilities and customer reviews. All of the official accommodation includes entry to the Efteling theme park, which makes some of them cheaper or comparable in price to staying offsite and buying your own tickets.

- The cheapest option is a holiday home/lodge in the Efteling Loonsche Land Holiday Village. Reviews are good, but the lodges are fairly cosy, it's a longer walk to the theme park and there's no swimming pool.
- There are several good choices if you have deeper pockets. The themed suites at the Efteling Hotel are my first choice, as they are the closest to the theme park. Reviews are positive and you can drive five minutes to a swimming pool. There are also more affordable Comfort Rooms.
- The treehouses at the Efteling Loonsche Land Hotel are another good luxury choice. They are better if you want more privacy but still want hotel meals.
- The best self catering lodges are at Efteling Bosrijk. It has a big range of properties and a swimming pool.

Hotels at Efteling
Hotel 1: Efteling Hotel (£££) - posh hotel rooms, closest to the theme park
The Efteling Hotel is the 'flagship' hotel at Efteling. It is the most expensive option and is the equivalent of staying at the Disneyland Hotel at Disneyland Paris (although it certainly isn't as expensive).
There are 122 rooms at Efteling Hotel including cheaper Comfort Rooms and the more expensive Junior Suites and Themed Suites, which make the most of Efteling's fairytale vibe. For comparison, the main Disneyland Hotel has about 500 rooms, so it's a lot bigger.
You get breakfast included at Efteling Hotel and the option of paying extra for lunch and dinner. There are some other perks, including free parking and access to an exclusive entrance to the park, which is only five minutes walk from the hotel. You can get into part of the theme park half an hour before everyone else turns up - although that perk is also available to guests at the other official accommodation. Efteling Hotel guests can also order room service, which isn't available at the other hotels.
There's also a soft play area, meet-and-greets with the Efteling characters and there's an offsite swimming pool that you have access to. The swimming pool isn't onsite unfortunately, but it can be found in a different village called Efteling Bosrijk, which is a five minute drive away.

Hotel 2: Efteling Loonsche Land Hotel (££) - cheaper hotel, further from the theme park
The second 'official' hotel at Efteling is the Hotel Loonsche Land.
It's a bit smaller and less expensive than the main Efteling Hotel and is in a holiday village to the east of the theme park, which also includes some other types of accommodation (we will get onto those shortly, thankyou for your patience). There are 75 rooms in total, which are all family rooms that sleep 5-6 people.
Efteling Hotel Loonsche Land has got a restaurant onsite where you can book in for meals, and you get breakfast included. There's also a bar for guests. The walk to the theme park is a little longer too, as it's 15 minutes walk away from Efteling, whilst the Efteling Hotel is just five minutes away. However, there is a shuttle bus if you want to save your legs for the theme park (my children usually reach their limit by the time we've reached the queue for a theme park).
Guests at the hotel can use a playground and there's a small animal petting area, but it doesn't have access to a swimming pool and it doesn't do room service.

Self catering option 1: Efteling Loonsche Land Holiday Village - cheaper self catering lodges
Next door to the Efteling Hotel Loonsche Land is a holiday village called - you guessed it - Holiday Village Efteling Loonsche Land.
These are more like the self catering lodges that you get at Landal, Haven or Center Parcs in the UK. You still get entry to the park included but you have the advantage of getting your own kitchen.
The holiday houses at Efteling Loonsche Land sleep six people but they only have two bedrooms, so they are a little cosy.

Self catering option 2: Efteling Bosrijk Holiday Homes - posher self catering lodges
Your next option is a lodge/holiday home within Efteling Bosrijk.
This is a pretty similar option to the holiday homes at Efteling Loonsche Land but they are a little bit posher and more spacious. Some of them overlook lakes and have nice terraces over the water (this would be a nightmare with my children but you may be more relaxed than me...).
Most of the holiday homes sleep up to six people, but you get an extra bedroom compared to the holiday homes at Efteling Loonsche Land, so you won't be falling over each other as much.
There are also some large properties in Efteling Bosrijk, which are good if you are on holiday with three aunties and a dozen cousins. The largest lodges sleep 24 people. Thankfully, Efteling only offer short breaks as there's no way you could get 24 family members to get on with each other for a full week.
The walk to the Efteling theme park is about 10 minutes, so it's slightly more convenient than Efteling Loonsche Land. There's a shuttle bus if you can't persuade your children to walk. Feel free to spend the bus ride giving them a speech about how far you used to walk as a child.
One big plus point is that there is an indoor swimming pool in the Efteling Bosrijk village that you can use. It's got a main pool, a paddling pool and a toddlers' pool.

Hybrid option 1: Aparthotel at Efteling Bosrijk (Poorthuys and Landhuys family rooms)
Your next option isn't described as an aparthotel by Efteling, but I reckon that's a fair description.
You stay in family rooms called the Poorthuys rooms or the Landhuys rooms within a large castle-style building. You get breakfast included and can go fully catered if you want to.
The rooms have a microwave and fridge but they don't have full cooking facilities. You could rustle up a pot noodle but you won't be cooking a roast dinner.
Some of the posher rooms have saunas and jacuzzis.
The Poorthys family rooms are in the busier part of the Bosrijk village whilst the Landhuys rooms are in a quieter part of the village.
You stay in family rooms called the Poorthuys rooms or the Landhuys rooms within a large castle-style building. You get breakfast included and can go fully catered if you want to.

Hybrid option 2: Themed rooms/treehouses at Efteling Loonsche Land Hotel - halfway between hotel rooms and lodges
This is slightly confusing, so pay attention please.
Besides the normal hotel in Loonsche Land there are also some 'themed hotel rooms', some of which are treehouses.
These look like lodges from the outside but they don't have a kitchen and are separate to the main hotel building. The idea is that you are a hotel guest and get breakfast in the hotel included but you have more of your own space.
The advantage of the 'themed hotel rooms' is that you don't have to be so self conscious about your children waking up at 4am and making lots of noise. The downside is you aren't connected to the hotel, but the rooms aren't far away from the main building.
It's something of a hybrid holiday for those want a bit of a hotel experience, but who also want to be a bit secluded.

Those six options above are all 'official' Efteling accommodation. This gives the whopping great advantage of getting tickets to the theme park included. This will save you about £35-£45 per person, per day.
However, you have to choose either two, three or four nights accommodation. You can't stay for a full week or two.

Which of the official Efteling hotels and self catering lodges gets the best reviews?
Let's attempt to narrow down the options by looking at some review scores.
The two Efteling hotels are very close on review scores
(It gets a little bit messy when you dig into the numbers, as some reviewers for Efteling Loonsche Land Hotel actually stayed in the holiday homes within the same village. We will have to overlook this to preserve my sanity.)
Meanwhile, the self catering review scores are a little more distinct:

We also dug out some review scores for the Aparthotels within Efteling Bosrijk (Poorthuys and Landhuys family rooms). They score 4.3/5 on Google reviews or 86%.
I would say that the official accommodation at Efteling all gets excellent reviews. The Efteling Bosrijk reviews are particularly impressive, although it's worth pointing out that the score bundles together a mix of self catering properties and an aparthotel.

The main entrance to Efteling is called the House of Five Senses (Huis van de Vijf Zintuigen) so we calculated the time to this part of the theme park, apart from Efteling Hotel, which has its own entrance to a different part of the park.
So, the Efteling Hotel is the winner here as it will save you about 20 minutes of walking per day compared to the various accommodations at Efteling Loonsche Land and Efteling Bosrijk.

Conclusion - which is the best hotel and self catering holiday home at Efteling?
There isn't a 'bad' option amongst the Efteling hotels and holiday homes. They all get good reviews and performed well in at least one area in our comparisons.
If you want a hotel and have a generous budget then there is hot competition between:
Efteling Hotel is in the best location for visiting the theme park. The treehouses at Efteling Loonsche Land Hotel provide quirky accommodation. The aparthotels/Poorthuys and Landhuys family rooms are within the highly-rated Efteling Bosrijk holiday village and they also give easy access to a swimming pool.
